This program is designed for working adults that are employed in the field of healthcare or are interested in moving into the healthcare field in a nursing home setting. Mount Mercy’s program has been recognized by the State of Iowa Professional Licensure Board as meeting all of the state and national requirements for licensure.
Nursing homes, like all businesses, need quality leadership. Nursing home administrators are essential to the planning and implementing of patient services . The Health Services Administration-Nursing Home program is designed to incorporate your work and life experiences with an academic, learning environment. The curriculum is a combination of basic business concepts blended with the special requirements of the healthcare and nursing home industry. Emphasis is placed on leadership, quality functioning, communication, analysis and skills.
All courses are taught in an accelerated format; 5 week, 8 week and 10 week classes. Classes begin every month and students are able to step into the program at any time during the year. Students are expected to graduate in the traditional 4 year period.
The Curriculum:
General Education Core: Challenges and broadens the knowledge of students in a variety of disciplines.
Management Core: Builds a foundation of concepts in accounting, business management, business law, human resource management and industrial relations.
Professional Health Core: Prepares the students in organizational management, regulations, resident care management, environmental management and financial management as related to the health care industry.
Practicums: Experiential opportunities in a setting appropriate to the student's focus of study.
Electives: Offers choices to students as they pursue special areas of interest.

Licensure Information:
Over 90% of our students successfully pass the National Nursing Home Administrator's Board exam, on the first attempt. The Iowa Board of Nursing Home Administrators evaluates the qualifications of applicants for nursing home administrator licensure and grants licenses to those who qualify.
