Second Degree:
If you already have a BA or BS and are looking for a second degree:

A Mount Mercy College graduate or a person who holds a baccalaureate degree from an institution whose accreditation is comparable to that granted to Mount Mercy College may earn a second baccalaureate degree at Mount Mercy College by fulfilling the following requirements:

1. The student must be admitted or readmitted to Mount Mercy College and to a major department other than the major department of the original degree.
2. The original degree must be completed and not in progress before the student begins work toward the second degree.
3. The student must earn at least 30 consecutive semester hours at Mount Mercy College beyond the original degree, with a cumulative grade point average of at least 2.00 (or higher, if the designated major requires a higher average.).
4. The student must fulfill all of the requirements of a major (different than the original major) as described in the College catalog in effect at the time of admission or readmission. *
5. Pass/Fail grades in courses used for completion of the second degree are unacceptable unless the course is designated in the College catalog solely as a Pass/Fail course.

General education requirements at Mount Mercy College do not apply to students earning a second degree. The student who earns a second baccalaureate degree will receive a Mount Mercy College diploma and may participate in graduation ceremonies. The student shall not be eligible for graduation honors with exceptions granted by petition through the vice president for academic affairs. An important consideration in the decision will be the cumulative GPA from the previous degree.

Associate in Arts (AA) Degree:
Mount Mercy College will transfer up to 63 credits, from your AA degree, and apply them towards your 123 credit requirement.

First, we will apply those courses that fulfill your general education requirements. (See general education requirements.)

Second, we will apply the remaining hours towards your general electives. (See general electives.)

To complete your degree you will need to complete:

  • The remaining general education requirements and
  • The major requirements and
  • Any general education credits needed.



    Transfer Information:
    A maximum of 63 semester hours (non-technical) from two-year, regionally-accredited, associate degree granting institutions will be accepted. There is no limit to the number of semester hours that will be accepted from a four-year, regionally-accredited institution. Credit earned at non-regionally accredited institutions may be accepted in transfer on a case by case basis.



    Transfer Credits Specific to BAA/BAS Degree:
    A maximum of 63 semester hours from regionally-accredited, postsecondary technical institutions will be transferred to Mount Mercy College for students pursuing majors available under the Bachelor of Applied Arts or Bachelor of Applied Science degrees.

    Total Credits required: 123



    Scholarship Information:
    Eligibility Requirements For Mercy Auxiliary Scholarship Applicants Current Academic Year:

    1. Must be a sophomore or junior attending Mt. Mercy College in the current school year.
    2. Major or Area of Concentration must be in a Health Related field of study.
    3. Must be enrolled in at least twelve (12) accredited hours of classes each semester.
    4. Minimum G.P.A. of 2.5.
    5. Applications for scholarship funds will be accepted no later than March 31 st, to be awarded the following academic year.
    6. Please return completed forms to Mercy Auxiliary, Attention: Jan Keyes, 701 10th Street SE, Cedar Rapids, IA 52403
    7. An interview will be scheduled following submission of the application.
    8. Notification will be given in early May.
    9. A Scholarship certificate will be presented at the Mercy Auxiliary General Membership meeting in late May.
    10. The entire amount of the scholarship will be paid to the Mt. Mercy Financial Aid office at the beginning of the academic year. It will be deposited in the recipient’s account.

    The amount of all scholarship funds offered will depend upon funds available at the time of the applicant ‘s acceptance, prior to the academic year, and not to exceed a total of $1,500.
